(II)

One and Another – Some town or city here – (It is winter) – “For a year I did not sleep” – The snow, withholding shapes.

We are, we are; Another nods – And it is dim and the lights, soft – (The smell fogs the air.)

Once was, One was – Together and apart and the (tunnels) back and forth across the district – (Tunnels) underground – Drop your coins for passage – (Tunnels) where One or Another passes – Out to the capital, out to the street.

(Strangers), figures, dark stars passing – The image blurs – The faces blur – One cannot see Another – Silver eyes, one cannot see another.

Safe passage in the evening – The (tunnels) growing underground – Who passes?

Down and down – The shaking tubes, coins rattling – One across from Another, the lights go on, then off – There is a falling – There is a clasping of hands – In the grey light of the carriage, One passes through Another. The faces of the passengers are still as the carriage ascends to a stop in some town or city, or perhaps the capital of the district; they are still as Another turns around to speak, and then – (disappears.)
